More than £1,850 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support in Shropshire when award-winning Shropshire horticulturist Tom Pountney opened his beautiful country garden to visitors for the third year running.

om, who owns Offcot in Kynaston, near Kinnerley, Oswestry, is a loyal charity supporter, welcoming visitors regularly to his half-acre garden to raise money for the National Garden Scheme.

“We had a fantastic day, with a record attendance and the garden looked absolutely amazing,” said Gill Eleftheriou, spokeswoman for Shrewsbury Macmillan Fundraising Group.

“Tom has done a herculean job through the long, hot spells which we've had this summer and it has certainly paid off. All visitors, including a number attending for the first time, were blown away by the banks of colour leading to tranquil seating spots, showcasing Tom's creative eye and horticultural excellence.

“Visitors were able to wander around at their leisure, marvelling at the exquisite planting, before enjoying refreshments home-made by Irene Rennie, our Macmillan team baker.

“Many people commented on the peacefulness and ambience, in such a beautiful countryside location, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A perfect day out.”

Tom welcomed guests and answered  horticultural queries, while a Shrewsbury Macmillan Fundraising Group plant stall was very busy.

“We would like to thank everyone who came and supported us and helped raise an wonderful £1,851 which will provide much-needed support to people affected by cancer in Shropshire,” added Gill.

The group’s next fundraising event is on Friday, September 5, when Halls Fine Art hosts a Shrewsbury Macmillan Coffee Morning and Antiques Experience between 10am and 2pm at Halls' headquarters on Bowman Way, Battlefield, Shrewsbury.

Professional valuations will be provided for paintings, sculptures, antiques, silver, jewellery, ceramics, coins, books and militaria for visitors who will also be able to preview Halls Fine Art’s forthcoming silver, jewellery and watches auction.

The Shrewsbury Macmillan Group fundraising team is encouraging people to support the event by bringing along items to be valued whilst also enjoying a cup of tea or coffee and home-made cakes. All donations will provide support for Shropshire people affected by cancer.
