A Music Technology student from Shrewsbury College got a once in a lifetime opportunity to spend the week in London sound recording for music legend, Albert Lee.
Vuyo Madikizela, Level 3 Music Technology student, spent a week doing what most music lovers and wannabe music producers would dream of doing - working alongside world-renowned music artists in preparation for a sell-out Saturday night concert.
Vuyo was put up in a hotel for the week by Albert Lee’s management company and asked to assist the sound technician during the six days of rehearsals, before the Saturday night’s 70th Birthday celebratory concert at the Cadogen Hall, London.
“After recording a choir in Wrexham the week beforehand with one of Albert’s sound technicians, I was asked if I would like to help out at the concert,” explained Vuyo.
“It was a life changing experience for me that opened my eyes to different aspects of music production. Before this experience I had my mind set on working in a studio, but after spending time working in a live environment I now see the importance of combining a variety of skills from the industry.
“Meeting and speaking to successful artists gave me fantastic insight and valuable knowledge that I can use towards my own achievements. I was given some great feedback from the crew and the sound technician working for Albert said he would recommend me for future gigs.
“When I leave Shrewsbury College I hope to progress to University and obtain a career in the music production."
Rob Wear, Vuyo’s Music tutor at Shrewsbury College, said: “It was an exciting opportunity for Vuyo to work with a real legend in the industry. It’s great for our students to gain professional industry experience outside of college as this prepares them for work, or furthering their education, once they leave the course."
