Spoil your mum this Mother's Day in Shrewsbury

It must be universally accepted, not just here in Shrewsbury, that mums have a tough job. Not only do they give birth, adopt, foster, or take on a child or several, they look after and nurture for them for the next 18 years – or in most cases, for the rest of their lives.

So here at thebestof Shrewsbury – we are saying show your mum some much needed love and thanks this Mother’s Day  - Sunday, March 18th. There are literally hundreds of things you can buy your mum, places you can take her to eat in Shrewsbury... and remember that many businesses in our wonderful town will be run by women who are mothers themselves so you’ll also be supporting them. Support the independents and the one offs. Perhaps get your individual card from somewhere individual – just like your ma and give her flowers.

When it comes to my relationship with my mum – I am soon to be 31, this definitely qualifies me for being an adult, but does it mean I can’t be my mother’s little girl?

I would argue no. I am the youngest of four and being the youngest allows me special privileges in that however old and independent I become, I will always be the ‘littlest’ and therefore am seen by everyone in my family perpetually as the baby.

This is very annoying when it comes to boyfriend advice and in an argument I am always wrong as I have been on the planet the least amount of time and others know better.

But when it comes to being ill, having money/car/relationship troubles, needing a lift/a Sunday Roast/a hug – my mother is always there.

In these respects, I am extremely lucky (aka spoiled), but it’s incredible to know that a mother’s love is timeless and constant (even if we do fall out several times a week!)

Recent times when my mum has gone beyond the call of duty include helping me move house, feeding me when the bank balance was a bit dry, helping me in the garden – even with a bad back (‘no, Catherine, that is not a weed’) and making me the most beautiful Christmas card. Ask my sisters and brother what she does with her endless stream of taking grandchildren hither and thither and you’ll get an even lengthier list.

So this Mother’s Day, I want to thank my mum for 31 years of loyal service, and it’s time I spent more time with her. For inspiration of places to eat or cocktails to try see our nights out section. If you fancy accompanying her to a spa or retreat  and having a beauty session or massage we have lots of ideas for you.

And of course there are the more unusual things you can try together – like a relax at the Miruji Beach Spa or some adrenaline and team challenges at the Shrewsbury Adventure Rope and Activity Centre. Whatever you do, show your mum your appreciation – she’ll be very glad you have.
