Tanners Wines, one of the UK's leading independent wine merchants, host a wine tasting evening with a difference next week to mark the welcome return of professional tennis to Shrewsbury.

The Shrewsbury Club, on Sundorne Road, is gearing up to stage the Aegon GB Pro-Series $15,000 tournament for men with a host of world ranked players ready to descend on the town. The event takes place between March 21-28.

A number of other attractions have been arranged to complement the tournament in Shrewsbury's first Festival of Tennis with one of the highlights a tennis-themed wine tasting evening presented by The Shrewsbury Club and Tennis Shropshire at Tanners, on Wyle Cop, on Wednesday, March 25.

"It will be wine tasting with a difference," said Dave Courteen, the managing director of The Shrewsbury Club who has helped organise the Festival of Tennis.

"It's an opportunity for people to come along and enjoy the history of Tanners wine cellars, what goes on, plus there will be wine tasting with the eight wines on the night all chosen as they are from the birthplaces of famous tennis players.

"There will be a quiz to see if guests can match the wines to the tennis player with a special prize for the most correct matches. We think it will be a good twist to a great night."

Pamela Paul, marketing and events manager at Tanners where wine has been sold since 1842, said it promised to be an enjoyable evening.

She added: "It's great to have a theme for a wine tasting evening and we are always pleased to be involved with the local community so we are delighted to be linked in with the Aegon tournament.

"The tournament is a great event for Shrewsbury and we are pleased to be part of the Festival of Tennis."

Tickets are available now priced £30 which includes the various wines, cheese, prosciutto, bread and olives, plus canapés prepared by the hospitality students at Origins Restaurant at Shrewsbury College.

Tickets can be purchased from reception at The Shrewsbury Club or by phoning (01743) 467755.
