Shrewsbury’s triathlon club, SYTri, is especially proud to be presenting its fifth Darwin’s Challenge Aquathlon, after being awarded the Level 1 Event Qualitymark status by Triathlon England.
Aquathlons are continuous, two-stage races involving swimming followed by running and Darwin’s Challenge has been very popular with both complete novices as well as experienced athletes.
Triathlon club coach, Sam Mountain, said: “This award acknowledges what we always strive for, which is that our event is of a high quality and geared towards offering competitors a superior experience. It’s not only competitors that benefit, spectators will also benefit from the high standards that have been met with the setup, planning and organisation of the event.”
This year’s Aquathlon takes place on Sunday, 3 May 2014 and is a great event for children and adults alike. The indoor swim takes place at Shrewsbury School’s Pool with distances ranging from 50 to 300 meters for juniors and 400 meters for youth and adult competitors.
The juniors’ run is on flat enclosed paths and grass in the grounds of the school and the adults’ run is a slightly more undulating 5k course through Shrewsbury and along the River Severn. The adults’ route ends with a sting in the tail… the extra challenge of a climb from the river, back up to the school - Darwin's Challenge!
Triathlon club coach, Sam Mountain, continues: “Multisport events like aquathlons and triathlons continue to gain popularity in Shropshire. No one is too slow to compete and the idea is to take part and have fun. Who knows, someone taking part in their first aquathlon in May could be competing in a triathlon by the end of the summer.”
