The Shrewsbury Market Hall is celebrating Halloween this weekend by getting involved with an artistic project. Pat Jones, from Beyond the Purple Door, is creating a special mural to mark the occasion. Visitors to the market hall can get involved by drawing on a giant chalkboard to create the ‘mural wall of the dead’ on November 2 and 3, between 10am and 4pm. There will also be the opportunity to toast lost loved ones with a drink as well as a chance to purchase some Mexican and Mexican inspired artwork. The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, traditionally takes place on November 1 in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day (November 2). The festival is growing in popularity and is now celebrated all over the world. It focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for, and remember, loved ones who have died. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honouring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favourite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. Kate Gittins, site facilities manager at the market said: “We are always pleased to be able to offer something a little bit different for our customers. The Day of the Dead is fast becoming a popular festival, not only in the UK but also in many other countries across the world. It’s great that Pat is getting involved and that local people can be part of the celebrations.” For more information contact Pat Jones on 07949 325836 or visit www.markethallshrewsbury.co.uk
