The team at a dental practice in Shrewsbury are offering local residents a free mouth cancer check next week, in support of Mouth Cancer Awareness Day.

The Dental Spa, based on Oxon Business Park, is opening its doors for members of the local community to visit the practice on Wednesday 17th September and receive a complimentary mouth cancer check as well as the chance to learn more about the disease.

Principal dentist at the practice, Roy Dixon, commented: "Nearly 8,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with mouth cancer every year. The disease can affect anyone of any age, and without early detection it can be fatal.

“With this in mind, the team and I are welcoming local residents to The Dental Spa for a free mouth cancer check on Wednesday 17th September. Our existing patients are already checked for the disease in their regular appointments, so we're hoping that they'll pass this message on to their friends and family members, and encourage them to visit us to talk about mouth cancer.”

Mr Sunil Bhatia, Oral and Maxillofacial Consultant at the practice, who recently held a lecture on the subject of the disease, said: “Mouth cancer checks are completely painless and take just a few minutes. A check typically involves a dentist looking your face and neck, as well as the soft tissues inside your mouth such as your tongue, cheeks, and the roof and floor of your mouth. It’s also an opportunity for patients to discuss any concerns they may have, such as mouth ulcers that haven’t healed within three weeks, red or white patches or other unusual lumps or swellings in their mouth.”

“Diagnosing the symptoms of mouth cancer early could save or extend the life of a sufferer dramatically,” says Mr Bhatia. “This is why we're so keen to educate people about the disease and let the public know the signs to look out for.”

Launched in 2011, Mouth Cancer Awareness Day aims to raise awareness of the disease by encouraging dental practices to offer free mouth cancer checks.

Free mouth cancer checks are available by appointment between 9.30am and 3pm on Wednesday 17th September. To book your free mouth cancer check, call The Dental Spa team on 01743 34 34 33.
