An award winning dental practice in Shrewsbury is pioneering counseling treatment to help people deal with their fear of the dentist.

The Dental Spa won the Software of Excellence - Business Performance Award 2014 at the Dentistry Awards last December and are always looking for new ways to improve patient care.

The free dental phobia counseling is led by senior dental nurse Laura Davies, who is currently studying for a degree in counseling at Staffordshire University.

She said: “The counseling is based on the Person Centered model with an element of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which identifies unhelpful thoughts and feelings, helping you develop more useful ways of thinking.

“It focuses on the here and now, as quite often what started the problem is not the same as what keeps it going.”

By ensuring patients feel in control of the situation their fear can be reduced. One way to do that is to reduce the number of technical terms used with patients.

Mrs. Davies said: “Explaining the procedure to them in straight-forward and jargon-free language, gives the patient a better understanding of what is being done.

“Another way fear can be reduced is for the dentists to constantly refine their technical procedures.

“Our dentists practice their injection techniques to minimise patient discomfort, and we also look at new technical developments, such as vibrating dental mirrors.

“If a vibrating mirror is placed against the gum being injected, the brain receives from signals from the vibrations and not the needle.”

Susanne Ellis, Operations Director at The Dental Spa, Oxon Business Park, Shrewsbury, said they have launched the counseling service to ensure that people who have a phobia of the dentist still have healthy teeth.

She said: “We aim to put patients minds at ease as soon as they enter the practice.

“We have created a patient lounge area different from a traditional dentists waiting area.

“We reduce the sounds and the smells that people associate with a trip to the dentists, because they can heighten patient fears.”
