Two men from a Shropshire-based caravan dealership are preparing for a three-day driving and navigational endurance challenge and have no idea where it will take them.

After sales director Tony Cooke and assistant marketing manager Ed Glover from Salop Leisure in Shrewsbury have signed up for The 2016 Macmillan 4x4 Challenge from March 4-6.

The 15th annual event aims to the test navigational skills, observation, on and off road driving ability and endurance by day and night of each two-man team. It is intended to be a long weekend of fun, covering between 400 and 1,000 miles with various tests along the way.

Teams, who must raise a minimum of £600 sponsorship for Macmillan Cancer Support to take part, will only find out the starting point the week before the event. They are then given a map, a compass and directions to follow over the next three days. Night stops mean sleeping rough in the vehicle or tent.

“It’s going to be a challenge but also good fun and it’s all for a very good cause,” said Ed. “The event could take us literally anywhere in Britain. Last year it finished in Dorset and another year drivers ended up in the Scottish Highlands.”

Tony and Ed, who will share the driving, hope to raise £1,000 for the charity and are seeking support from local companies and individuals to help reach their target. Any corporate sponsor can have their logo on the team’s Land Rover for the challenge.

Anyone wishing to support Tony and Ed can donate online at https://www.justgiving.com/SALOP-4X4/ . Ed may be contacted at Salop Leisure on Tel: 01743 282400 or ed.glover@salopleisure.co.uk

This event is linked to the MaxAndTheMac12 challenge set by their work colleague Max Ball who aims to complete 12 challenges in 12 months for Macmillan Cancer Support. Max was inspired to set himself the challenge after his father, Steve, was diagnosed with terminal cancer last October and is now undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
