Sales of caravan holiday homes, motorhomes and touring caravans were 15 per cent up on last year’s West Midlands Caravan and Motorhome Show, which was held at Salop Leisure in Shrewsbury. Attendance figures at the 10-day show were also up as the company sensed a feeling of optimism amongst customers.

“There has definitely been a change in public perception about the economy since September and the doom and gloom has been replaced by a willingness to make things happen,” said Salop Leisure’s chairman Tony Bywater.

“We have gauged a feel good factor with confidence returning to the market. Families, who have been holding back for two or three years, are now starting to spend and smiles are returning to faces.

“A large number of existing caravan holiday home owners have upgraded to new models, beating the five per cent VAT charge that is to be introduced by the Government from next April.

“People are looking to make long term investments for holidays for themselves and their families. They are opting for caravans and motorhomes as value for money alternatives to investing in a week’s holiday abroad for the next few years.

“The beauty of caravans or a motorhome is that you can get away anytime you please and you can share them with your family.”

He reported that customers interested in locating a caravan holiday home in Mid Wales and the Heart of England was greater than ever at the show. “People are looking for scenic locations where they can escape in peace and quiet as well as enjoying outdoor activities,” added Mr Bywater.

“It has been proved that owning a caravan holiday home helps busy people to relax and recharge their batteries before returning to work on a Monday totally refreshed.”

The show, which gave caravanners their first glimpse of around 40 new models for 2013, was designed as a one stop shop for existing owners and first time buyers.
