More than £2,200 has been raised for two children’s hospices after the boss of a North Wales company lost more than seven stone in weight.

Mark Hughes, director of Jolly Good Vehicle Rentals in Wrexham, did a ‘sponsored slim’ in order to shed the pounds as a fundraiser for both Ty Gobaith Children’s Hospice in Conwy and Hope House Children’s Hospice in Morda, just across the border in Shropshire.

As a Christmas fundraiser, he dressed up as Father Christmas and initially pledged to lose enough weight in the run up to Christmas to help him “fit down the chimneys much more easily”. By Christmas Eve he had lost an impressive three stone.

And his healthy habits have continued into 2014, with a total of seven stone now gone. With that half of Mr Hughes’ wardrobe has also gone after shrinking down from a 52 inch jacket to a 44 inch one.

To date, customers pledging money at Jolly Good Vehicle Rental depots across the country have raised a total of £2,212.

“I have wanted to lose some weight for a long time and what better motivation than to help raise fund for such an incredible cause,” said Mr Hughes.

“Both Hope House and Ty Gobaith are provide such a vital and amazing service to children with terminal illnesses or conditions. In addition to residential care, they also provide respite and at home care and bereavement support for family members, including siblings.

“We initially tied the fundraiser into Christmas, with me dressing up as ‘Jolly Santa’, as a bit of fun but even after that, our customers have continued to donate and we have raised a brilliant £2212.”

And Mr Hughes has experience the added bonus of his own improved health along the way.

“I feel much better and have so much more energy and to know we’ve raised all that money too is just the icing on the cake, although I’m not going to eat it,” he added.

Jolly Good Vehicle Rentals was set up by Mr Hughes eight years ago and is based on Pandy Business Park. The company also has franchises or depots in five other towns - Shrewsbury, Colwyn Bay, Chippenham, Ely and Deeside.
