Tickets are now on sale for the annual county sports awards, which this year include an after-dinner speech by former Olympic gold medallist and sporting legend, Dame Mary Peters.
Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, the County Sports Partnership are holding the Energize Awards 2008 in association with Paycare on Thursday October 16 at the Prostar Stadium, home of Shrewsbury Town FC, from 6.30pm. Tickets for the awards cost £20 and include entry to the awards, a three course meal, complimentary drink at the reception and the opportunity to hear the inspirational former pentathlete Dame Mary Peters speak about her experiences.
The awards celebrate and reward the success and achievements in sport and physical activity in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin over the past year. Importantly, the awards aim to recognise achievement right across the spectrum of participants; from career sportspeople to volunteers.
Chris Child, Partnership Manager of Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin said, "Dame Mary Peters is no stranger to hard work, having had a long and successful career in sport. We are delighted to have her as a guest at the Energize Awards and to have her join us in celebrating local achievement in sport and physical activity. I would like to invite local people and organisations to come to the awards evening and not only hear what Dame Mary has to say, but to also hear the inspirational stories of our nominees."
Dame Mary Peters was a superb athlete, winning medals at both the Olympic and Commonwealth Games and breaking a world record in the Pentathlon. Since retiring from competition she has continued to serve British and Irish athletics in many ways, which culminated in her being awarded the DBE in 2000.
