A touring caravan engineer says he is overwhelmed by the generosity of friends, family, workmates and even strangers who are supporting his fundraising for the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund.

Nick Wood, 34, from Broseley Wood, who works for Shrewsbury-based caravan and motorhome dealership Salop Leisure, will be taking part in a six-day trek to climb the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains from June 22-27 next year.

The Toubkal mountain peak in south western Morocco stands at 4,167 metres and temperatures in June can hit 40 degrees Celsius.

Aiming to raising £1,200 for the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, he has already raised £900 in a month and hopes to exceed the target to support people receiving cancer treatment.

His employer, Salop Leisure, is sharing the cost of his registration for the trek and workmates are sponsoring him with donations. All the money raised will go the charity.

The idea of taking on a charity challenge came to him whilst on holiday this year and he wanted to choose something different.

“I just felt like I wanted to do something to help others,” he said. “Obviously it is going to be hard work, but it’s for a very good local charity. Lingen Davies Cancer Fund is an incredible charity that has intervened and helped many of my family and friends who have received the devastating diagnosis of cancer.

“The money raised will support the charity to continue its fantastic work support."

“Since I started raising money, I have been amazed at the number of people I have spoken to that have received treatment supported by the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund. The support I am receiving from friends, family, workmates and even strangers is overwhelming.”

He admits the six-day trek is going to be a big test of his endurance but is looking forward to visiting Morocco for the first time. He will be trekking up to six hours a day in searing heat.

Having completed the Birmingham Half Marathon a couple of times in the past, he is planning a training schedule for the new year to prepare for the challenge.
