Shrewsbury Town Council is pleased to announce that the newly refurbished play area at Hermitage Green in Belle Vue is now open, offering children an exciting, safe, and welcoming space to play.

The upgraded facilities include multi-play units with slides designed for both 3–5-year-olds and 5–10-year-olds, swings for juniors and infants, a swing basket suitable for children up to 10 years old, and an accessible roundabout — helping to ensure children of different ages and abilities can enjoy the space together.

The project forms part of the Town Council’s ongoing commitment to investing in play provision across the town. Shrewsbury Town Council has pledged to update two play parks across its estate each year, helping to ensure that facilities remain safe, inclusive, and enjoyable for future generations. In total, the Town Council manages 57 play areas across Shrewsbury.

Improvements at Hermitage Green also include the installation of new wetpour safety surfacing beneath all play equipment, enhancing safety for children at play. All fencing surrounding the play area has been fully renovated to create a secure environment, while new seating provides comfortable spaces for parents, carers, and visitors.

The design of the refurbished play area was informed by consultation with the Eco Council at Coleham Primary School. Councillor Kate Halliday worked with pupils to gather their ideas and suggestions, which were taken into account as part of the refurbishment, helping to shape a play space that reflects young people’s views and promotes inclusive play.

Councillor Kate Halliday, Shrewsbury Town Council ward member for Belle Vue, said:
“We are delighted to see the Hermitage Green play area reopen for children and families to enjoy. Investing in high-quality play spaces is vital for children’s health, wellbeing, and social development. It has been especially rewarding to involve local pupils in the process and reflect their ideas in the final design. This project demonstrates our commitment to improving play facilities across Shrewsbury and creating spaces that work for everyone in the community.”

The play area at Hermitage Green is open to the public 24/7, allowing families to enjoy the space at times that suit them.

Shrewsbury Town Council remains committed to enhancing parks and play areas across the town, supporting healthier lifestyles and stronger communities through well-designed, accessible outdoor spaces.
