The UK is in pole position in the super-fast, technology-driven world of motorsport, and Shrewsbury College is training the next generation of engineers to join this highly-skilled and competitive industry.

Two custom-built RST rally sport trainer cars, arrived at the College last week, donated by BR Racing, a rally driving school in Essex. The new partnership, set up by Ken McKerral, Curriculum Leader for Engineering at Shrewsbury College, with BR Racing, means that students will receive a unique, hands-on experience, unlike any other in the county.

BR racing have donated the cars for Motor Vehicle students to strip down the components and service the parts, as well as work on repainting and designing the bodywork.

Mr McKerral said: “This is an exciting new venture for students to get involved in. As a department we are always looking to expand our already successful motor vehicle provision and include industry-relevant qualifications, which will help our students gain employment in life after education.

“I wanted to introduce a ‘motor sport’ aspect in particular to the College to inspire and excite youngsters, who will get the opportunity to not only work on these rally cars but to see them raced. Our intention is to set up a College team, including engineers and drivers, and race the cars locally and nationally.

“The cars are fantastic, they have fully adjustable suspension to suit driver and race event and are highly tuned and reliable. We are privileged to be able to have a continual supply to work on.”

Level 3 Motor Vehicle student, Rachel Massey, 18, from Bridgnorth, said: “I think it’s great that the College has introduced rally cars to the campus. The hands-on practical mechanical work has always been my favourite part of the course. The facilities here are great and when we are in the workshop, it feels like we are in a commercial, fully working garage. I know that a lot of students have already said how they are looking forward to working on the rally cars.

“The motor industry has always been seen as predominantly male dominant, but that has never put me off. I really enjoy studying at the College and have found my tutors and peers extremely supportive. I travel from Bridgnorth to study here, but the travel is definitely worth it.”
