This year's Live at Ludlow Castle series once again demonstrated why the event has quickly become one of the highlights of the summer music calendar. Established in 2023 and now in its fourth year, the concerts, promoted by Futuresound, continue to attract major artists while retaining a relaxed, welcoming feel that many larger festivals have lost.
The line-up this year was nothing short of outstanding. Snow Patrol delivered an emotional, hit-filled set that had thousands singing every word, with Run, Open Your Eyes and the inevitable Chasing Cars echoing around the castle walls. It was one of those performances where every song seemed to become a shared memory between band and audience. Especially after the sun set and a sea of phone lit up the intimate arena like candles.
A few nights later, The Streets transformed the historic setting into one huge celebration. Mike Skinner's wit, storytelling and effortless stage presence brought a completely different energy to Ludlow, as A Grand Don't Come for Free was performed alongside a host of fan favourites. The contrast between the medieval backdrop and Skinner's uniquely British observations somehow made the night even more memorable. The retro bus stop he graffitied throughout was a nice touch.
Richard Ashcroft provided one of the emotional high points of the series. With a catalogue that's become part of British music history, he effortlessly moved between solo classics and timeless Verve anthems. Hearing The Drugs Don't Work, Lucky Man and a spine-tingling Bitter Sweet Symphony reverberate around a castle that's stood for almost 1,000 years was a genuinely special experience.
Then came the perfect finale. Scissor Sisters brought colour, glamour and an infectious sense of fun, turning the castle grounds into one giant open-air disco. Take Your Mama, Filthy/Gorgeous and I Don't Feel Like Dancing had every generation on its feet, bringing the curtain down on another unforgettable month of music. My daughter and I dressed in our finest sequins and were pleased to see that so many others had donned their best finery too.
But what really sets Live at Ludlow Castle apart isn't just the calibre of the artists, it's the entire experience. Futuresound deserves enormous credit for creating an event that feels both slickly organised and remarkably relaxed. Entry is efficient, safe and well organised, the site is easy to navigate and, despite thousands of people attending, everything seems to run with effortless professionalism and nothing feels overcrowded.
Food and drink are another standout feature. Rather than endless queues often associated with outdoor concerts, there is a fantastic variety of independent food vendors and bars spread across the site, meaning you can spend more time enjoying the music than waiting to be served. The facilities are equally impressive, with plenty of clean toilets available throughout the evening, making a noticeable difference to the overall experience. I love the shepherd's hut's which are available for premium ticket holders within the inner castle walls.
For our family, this year's concerts were even more special because it was our second visit, with our children, now aged seven and ten. Live at Ludlow Castle is refreshingly family-friendly. Before the headline acts take to the stage, the Inner Bailey becomes the perfect adventure playground.
Beanbags and picnic benches provide space to relax while children can safely explore, play hide-and-seek and soak up the festival atmosphere. It allows parents to enjoy the occasion without feeling confined to one spot, creating the sort of memories that stay with children long after the music has finished.
That's perhaps the greatest achievement of Live at Ludlow Castle. It doesn't simply put on concerts—it creates an experience. Whether you're a lifelong music fan, visiting with friends or introducing your children to live music for the first time, the event strikes a rare balance between world-class entertainment and genuine accessibility.
Against the backdrop of one of England's finest medieval castles, with exceptional artists, excellent organisation and an atmosphere that feels both vibrant and welcoming, Live at Ludlow Castle has firmly established itself as one of the country's premier outdoor concert series.
