The King’s coronation is being celebrated in Shrewsbury with a giant screening and royal thrones being installed in The Square.

The screening will take place in the castle grounds on Saturday, May 6, with Shrewsbury BID providing deckchairs and beanbags for people to relax whilst watching the ceremony on a big screen.

On the same day, two royal thrones will be placed in The Square for people to try out for size and take selfies, with the chance to win a £150 shopping voucher for a Shrewsbury business of their choice.

Emma Molyneux, project coordinator at Shrewsbury BID, said the castle screening was proving very popular and was already fully booked.

“We have held screenings of things like royal weddings and Wimbledon finals in the town centre before, and the castle grounds work perfectly,” she said.

“We asked people to book a place for the King’s coronation so we can manage numbers, and have in fact already reached full capacity, which is great.

“We hope people will bring the family, pack a picnic from one of Shrewsbury’s fantastic eateries, and relax on our bean bags and deck chairs to take in the historic experience in such a wonderful setting.

“People are welcome to bring their own chairs and rugs, as the use of a bean bag or deck chair is not guaranteed with a booking, and it’s a good idea to arrive early to get a good spot on the grass.

“We are just keeping our fingers crossed for pleasant weather!”
