As a family and divorce lawyer, I have the privilege of guiding people through one of the most challenging transitions in their lives.

Divorce is rarely just a legal process—it’s an emotional journey that can shake a person’s self-worth, financial stability, and sense of identity. Many of my clients begin this journey feeling broken, frightened, and overwhelmed, unable to see a future beyond the pain and uncertainty of separation. But one of the greatest rewards of my job is witnessing the transformation that takes place between the first consultation and the final settlement.

It is often women—particularly middle-aged women—who feel the most vulnerable at the start of the process. Many have spent years prioritizing their families over their careers, leaving them without financial independence, pensions, or personal savings. They may lack confidence, sometimes as a result of the dynamics in their marriage, and fear how they will manage on their own. But it’s not just women—some husbands also endure emotional abuse and struggle with self-doubt as they face an uncertain future. Regardless of gender, the early days of a divorce can be filled with anxiety, grief, and a profound sense of loss.

I always remind my clients: there is light at the end of the tunnel and “it will get better”. While the path is rarely easy, time and resilience lead to remarkable personal growth. By the end of the process, I see a change—often dramatic—in my clients. The timid, uncertain individuals who once sat across from me in tears become confident, self-sufficient, and empowered. Many pursue careers they never imagined possible, regain financial independence, and develop a renewed sense of self-worth. They may have entered my office thinking their world was ending, but they leave knowing a new, better chapter is just beginning.

Divorce is not just about untangling legal ties; it’s about rediscovering one’s own strength. It’s a journey from fear to freedom, and I am honoured to witness it every day.
