You have probably heard the term work-life balance before, and not given it much thought as you continue to do your daily duties. 

For some, a work-life balance does not mean leaving their work at work, but instead leaving the office, getting home and checking their emails as soon as they get back to their home.

But exactly what is a work life balance? This will depend on the person, but a healthy work life balance occurs when there is a daily effort to make time and commitment for individuals and activities which are not associated to the work place. For example, family, friends, community participation, spirituality, personal growth, self care, and other personal activities (in addition to the demands of the workplace)

Yes, we all want to be successful at what we do but according to the Mental Health Foundation, not getting a good work-life balance can be damaging to our health. The demand for longer hours, high pressure targets and other factors such as increased living costs, see us having less and less ‘me time’ and more time at work, worrying about how to make ends meet.

However, what many employers over look, is that a happy work force increases loyalty and productivity. For example, LinkedIn, United Space Alliance, NovTeq and W.L. Gore and Associates are incredibly successful and have the highest rating when it comes to encouraging their employees to get balance in their lives.

So what can you do to try and get a work-life balance that works for you? Forbes has devised five points where you can start.

1) Let go of perfectionism

2) Introduce a balance with work related technology (for example email, phone calls & text messages)

3) Exercise and meditate

4) Limit time-wasting activities and people

5) Change the structure of your life.
