A specialist plants centre in Shrewsbury has reported a busy start to the new year despite the wintry weather that is keeping people out of their gardens.

Tim Robinson, manager of the Love Plants centre at Salop Leisure’s Emstrey headquarters, said he and his team have been busy advising gardeners on a wide range of topics during January, with many already plantings seeds in greenhouses ready for spring growing season.

Due to popular demand, Love Plants is stocking wide range of seed potatoes and peat free, recycled, organic compost this year and bare root fruit trees, hedging, conifers and evergreens have been a great demand.

“We are getting a lot of interest in spring bulbs for pots, primroses and hellebores and it’s the right time of year to pot up lily bulbs,” said Mr Robinson. “Gardeners are busy planting seeds including tomatoes, asparagus and onions.

“The welcome signs of catkins in the hedgerows and bulbs starting to push through is a sign that spring is on the way, even if weather is still very wintry.

“All our research points to the fact that customers are taking a much more interest in their gardens this year and we look forward to helping them plan for the months ahead when they can enjoy the fruits of their work.”
