Bristle to Bristle: Manual vs Electronic Toothbrushes

For as long as the electric toothbrush has been around, there has been hot debate between users of the latest in modern technology vs those who swear by the ‘old-school’ way.

So, which one is better for your oral hygiene? And does really it matter?

In truth, yes, it does make a difference.

The single most important thing you can do to maintain good dental hygiene is to brush twice a day, for at least 2 minutes. This can, of course, be achieved whether you are using a manual brush or an electric one.

However, a recent study found that people who use an electric toothbrush have healthier gums, less tooth decay and keep their teeth for longer. Compared with those who use a manual toothbrush.

The obvious difference is stark between the two. But there are also subtler differences which you may not have considered. If you want to stick with your trusted manual toothbrush, there are still things you can do improve your oral hygiene without having to splash out on a brand-new toothbrush.

Time Spent Brushing

Most electric toothbrushes come with a built-in timer, which makes the user aware of how long they’ve been brushing their teeth. This can be especially useful for children. However, using a separate timer is always an alternative option if you want to stick with manual.

Pressure

Most electric toothbrushes have a function that either stops you from brushing too hard, or at least alerts you when you are. Understandably, brushing harder feels like you’re cleaning your teeth better. However, vigorous brushing over months and years will cause irreversible damage to your teeth and gums. Yikes!  So, if you do choose the manual approach, make a conscious effort to apply light pressure and allow the bristles to do the work.

Technique

Achieving optimum oral hygiene requires more than an ad hoc technique. The recommended way to brush is by going over each tooth surface in small circles at a 45-degree angle. Helping to remove plaque and food debris and gently cleaning your gums at the same time. This is possible with a manual brush, but it takes far less effort when using an electric brush with an oscillating head.
