My husband and I recently headed to the Albright Hussey in Shrewsbury for their Steak Night, and it was one of those evenings that reminded us how nice it is to have somewhere like this on our doorstep.
The Albright Hussey has been a client of ours at thebestof Shrewsbury for around 20 years, so we’ve known the team for a long time. There’s also a more personal connection, as it’s where we got married! We’ve been back a few times over the years but, if I’m honest, it had been quite a while since we’d been for an evening out.
You know how it is. Kids, work, busy lives... sometimes you realise you haven’t done something for absolutely ages!
So, when we saw the Albrigth Hussey's next Steak Night was on Friday 18th September, we put excuses aside and booked on.
One of the first things I noticed when we arrived was just how easy it is. There’s plenty of free parking right outside, which is always a bonus when you’re heading out for dinner.
We were warmly welcomed in the main bar by owner Paul, who was around throughout the evening chatting to guests and making sure everyone was enjoying themselves. It's always nice to see an owner who was so visible and involved rather than tucked away somewhere.
As part of the Steak Night offer, we were offered a complimentary welcome drink. I was driving, so opted for a non-alcoholic beer, while Andy went for a glass of the house red, which he was very happy with!
We chose our starters while sitting in the bar before being shown through to our table.
I went for the prawns and Andy chose the pork belly bites. And, as is often the case when we're out together, we shared them. I'm glad we did because both were really good. The pork belly in particular was incredibly tender and full of flavour.
Then it was time for the main event.
We went for the Chateaubriand, which came with fries, mushrooms, vine tomatoes, gem lettuce and some rather excellent onion rings.
And yes, we're probably a little biased given our connection with the Albright Hussey, but we genuinely enjoyed it. The steak was lovely and the whole thing felt like a proper treat without being overly formal.
There was a nice atmosphere in the restaurant too. It was busy, with plenty of people enjoying their evening, but it wasn't noisy or raucous. Just the sort of atmosphere where you can sit, enjoy your food and have a good chat.
And that's probably what I enjoyed most about the evening. It wasn't just about the food. It was about having a proper night out together, somewhere local, and taking a bit of time away from the usual routine.
It was also lovely to be back at the Albright Hussey after such a long gap and, in a way, to see it from a different perspective. We've got very happy memories of the place from our wedding day, but it's also somewhere that's clearly still making new memories for people all the time.
So, if you've never tried one of the Albright Hussey's Steak Nights, I'd definitely recommend going. It's a lovely setting, there's plenty of parking, the atmosphere is relaxed and, from our experience, the food certainly didn't disappoint.
We'll be keeping an eye out for what they're doing next.
