The Oteley Estate in Ellesmere will be opening its 10 acres of private gardens as part of the National Garden Scheme. The garden open day is taking place on Bank Holiday Monday - May 4th from 10am – 4pm, 99 years after the gardens opened when the scheme first began in 1927.
The National Garden Scheme gives visitors access to exceptional private gardens across the UK and funds nursing and health charities. Last year, the NGS raised £3,875,596 for its beneficiary charities.
The Oteley Estate has remained in the same family since the 1500s and is now run by Ian and Clare Mainwaring. The farm rears cattle, sheep and pigs and has an on-site farm shop which sells Oteley’s homegrown beef, lamb and pork plus Oteley cured bacon, ready meals and pies, and locally sourced food, drink and gifts. There is also a café in the old coach house. Both are open weekly from Thursday to Sunday, and they will be open during the open garden event.
“Join us on Bank Holiday Monday to explore our 10 acres of garden where you can spot unique features such as the clock tower and Swiss Cottage,” said Clare Mainwaring from the Oteley Estate. “We have some huge mature trees, colourful rhododendrons and azaleas blooming, and beautiful views across the mere. It’s amazing to think visitors have explored these gardens for nearly 100 years. After a leisurely walk around the gardens, you can relax with a coffee and a cake in our café.
“Come and discover the home of Ellesmere’s iconic Highlands, and what’s on the other side of the mere, while we raise money for a great cause.”
Clare added that the garden open day is a highlight of the year for her father-in-law, Robert Mainwaring, who is proud that he and the family have continued the tradition for so many years.
The Oteley Estate’s private gardens will be open for the National Open Garden Scheme on Monday, May 4th, from 10am – 4pm. Entrance to the garden is £6 for adults and free for children. You can book tickets in advance at https://ngs.org.uk/gardens/oteley-sy1 or pay on the gate. There is free parking onsite, and dogs on leads are welcome.
The Oteley Estate’s café and farm shop is open Thursday to Sunday every week, from 10am to 4pm. Find out more at www.oteley.com.
