Strawberry Hill Golf Club in Twickenham has joined an elite band of winners of the High Achiever GolfMark Award, which recognises junior and beginner-friendly clubs.
It is only the second Middlesex club to win the High Achiever status and junior organiser Margaret Bedford remarked: “We are really chuffed. We are proud of what we do for juniors and beginners. We have lots of fun – I think that’s the answer!”
Strawberry Hill is hosting an open day on Bank Holiday Monday, 4 June, when visitors are offered the chance of a free round on the nine-hole course and beginners can take part in free coaching sessions. It’s an annual feature of the club’s successful efforts to reach out to new golfers of all ages and returners to the game.
The club currently has around 300 members, of whom almost one-third are women. The club also boasts a thriving junior section which has grown from 15 to 35 in the last two years, thanks to good links with local schools and community groups. There’s currently a push to increase the number of girls who play.
The youngsters are offered weekly group coaching, with a girls-only session once a month; they receive a monthly newsletter detailing events and contact information; and juniors are included in all club fun competitions, regardless of whether they have a handicap.
Strawberry Hill is also a centre for the Middlesex Golf Partnership’s County Academy Programme, which identifies and coaches youngsters with potential. In addition, the club has worked with local schoolchildren with learning difficulties, for the past four years.
Strawberry Hill is about to become a Get into Golf centre, supporting the England Golf Partnership’s national campaign to encourage adult beginners to try the game by offering free taster sessions.
Scott Margetts, the Partnership’s county development officer, commented: “I am very pleased that Strawberry Hill Golf Club can now be nationally recognised as a junior and beginner friendly golf club. It is a pleasure to see the excellent structure which is in place, particularly for young golfers, and I am sure the club will continue to be successful in the future.”
The GolfMark Award was developed by England Golf to identify and acknowledge golf facilities in England which are junior and beginner friendly. It also integrates Sport England’s Clubmark award - a national standard for quality sports clubs recognised across the country.
