What can I say, well I love Lichfield Cathedral and it used to be a regular place that I used to visit. It has some wonderful treasures including the wonderfully preserved Anglo Saxon stone carving of the Lichfield Angel and the amazing illuminated Lichfield Gospels that is around nine hundred years old and has the earliest known example of the written Welsh language. There are other treasures on display also with various regalia associated with the workings of Cathedral services etc. There is a rich history including the siege during the English Civil War in which the central tower collapsed through the roof of the cathedral after being bombarded by canon fire (the cads!!). There is a sculpture by the renowned artist Jacob Epstien and wonderful stained glass windows to behold. There are a number of events and concerts that take place throughout the year so it is worth keeping one's eye out for these.

The Cathedral Square is a lovely place to relax and a visit to the cafe within the grounds is a must (you deserve a treat).

Within the grounds is easy access to Erazamus Darwin's House. Erazamus was Charles Darwin's grandfather and it was his observations and notebooks that inspired Charles towards the theory of evolution. I hope that you enjoy your visit though if you are like me, you will love it.

The stain glass windows are beautiful and the journey they had to get there is a fascinating story. Dr Samuel Johnson's portrait by Josiah Reynolds was good to see close up .

Magnificent inside and out. Never tire of standing outside and looking at the Kings and wondering on the sheer skill of those many, many workers that must have worked on them for generations.

A must see if you are in the Midlands

The only UK cathedral with 3 spires ("The Ladies of the Vale"), Lichfield Cathedral is a must visit if you find yourself in Lichfield.

There has been a cathedral here since 700 AD - you can sense the history all around. A beautiful space inside and the surrounding cathedral close is beautiful. Don't miss the Vicars' Close around the corner.

The staff/volunteers are friendly and helpful.

There is a box office at the front but admission is free - although you are encouraged to leave a donation. A cathedral like this one requires around ยฃ5,000 per day to keep it standing and open.
