Young Chefs Cook-Up a Feast

Gastronomically gifted pupils from schools in Herts and Beds did battle on Saturday (25th Feb) in the District Final of Rotary Young Chef of the Year Competition held at North Herts College (Hitchin Campus).

Competitors had a total 2 and half hours to whip-up a 3 course meal costing no more than £15.  In a very closely fought contest, Zoe Antoniou, a pupil of Chancellors School (Brookmans Park) was judged the winner by the resident chefs of North Herts College catering unit.  Zoe's mouthwatering menu consisted of Leeks and quails eggs with vinaigrette, Saffron marinated see bass on a bed of crushed new potatoes, stir-fried peppers and courgettes, and a sauce vierge, and was rounded off with a truly divine dessert of Layers of filo pastry filled with white chocolate cream and raspberry and elderflower jellies.

When presenting the certificates to the winner and runners-up, celebrity chef Andrew Turner, of the award winning Wiltons Restaurant of Jermyn Street London, praised the high standard of the meals produced by the entrants.

The Rotary Young Chef Competition is just one of the many Youth related schemes run by RIBI (Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland).  Please visit www.ribi.org for general information about Rotary, email info@tilehouserotary.org for information about Rotary in Hitchin, or if you prefer, search for "Friends of Hitchin Tilehouse" on Facebook.
