We are always proud of our people and now is a great time for four of them to be recognised in the Queen's New Year's Honours list.

In a list that includes a CBE for Olympic cycling supremo and gold medal winner Victoria Pendleton, who we proudly claim as a local girl, we have three women and one man recognised. Where 47% of those awarded honours are women, we should be proud of our women in Hitchin!

There is an OBE for Diane Burleigh, for services to the legal profession.

MBEs go to Hannah Seakins, for services to military operations and Jane White, for services to the community.

The newly reinstated BEM is awarded for the second time this year and one goes to Robert Girvan for services to the community.
