Two more - very old - reasons I love Hitchin

At a time when new developments are proposed across the town - Churchgate, Portmill Lane, Top Field to name just three - now is definitely the time to make the most of our fantastic existing businesses.

My son visited Del Basso in Bucklersbury to buy a Vespa. The service he's received in researching and then purchasing the scooter was truly exceptional. He could have gone online. He could have gone to a bigger retailer elsewhere. Now, he would go nowhere else. They're friendly and helpful and that's exactly what he needed.

I went with him but really felt that he would have been treated well even if he'd been alone. Definitely a business we should be proud of in Hitchin,

Later on Saturday afternoon I went on a mission to Brookers. When you live in a house that's over 100 years old, there are bound to be maintenance issues from time to time. Replacing a grate that is probably original, but broken, is not something I can do alone.

As usual, the staff at Brookers' Bilton Road store were helpful and found me a temporary solution until a replacement can be sourced.

I could have gone to a major retailer in Stevenage or Letchworth, but it's unlikely they would have been so helpful and so prepared to give their time and expertise to help me out.

Definitely two of our biggest assets in Hitchin and two of the well-established businesses we should be proud of.
