Tension in the body? Tension in the mind? Relax the body, relax the mind…

TENSION – When stressed, your body produces hormones that increase muscle tension and pain sensitivity," says Jay Winner, M.D., author of Stress Management Made Simple (You can read more here). Relaxing tension in the body can help relax tension in the mind.

LET GO – Use the following technique to gradually relax the body:

  • Close your eyes and take a breath in through the nose and sigh out through the mouth
  • Now take a deep belly breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth, allowing the out breathe to be slightly longer than then the in
  • Repeat twice
  • Now scan each part of your body starting with your eyes. Relax the muscles around the eyes, let go of any tension there.
  • Continue with the rest of your body; remember to relax your forehead, jaw, neck, shoulders and hands. All of which are common places we can hold tension in our body
  • Once you have worked your way through your entire body, recall a memory that makes you really happy, really recall the sights, feelings and sounds associated with that memory, smile to yourself, take a nice big stretch and open your eyes feeling relaxed and recharged.

Use this technique as a wonderful start to your day and throughout the day as needed.
