The 2012 Hitchin Fashion Show went off with a splash, with the featured shops all putting on an array of their best products

Despite horrendous rain in the week before Saturday 28 April and grey skies bringing cold air and gloom to the Market Square, more than 100 models showed off the fashions available in Hitchin.

More than a dozen shops pulled out all the stops and a flier provided to the audience gave details of each retailer and a map showing their location.

Hitchin Fashion Show started at noon. Eleven stores took part to show the very best in store for this season.

A specially-constructed catwalk saw models – mostly local talent – showing off everything from underwear to vintage, mother of the bride to menswear. Even better – these are all independent stores situated in Hitchin itself.

Sarah Clare, owner of ‘What Sarah did…’, said: “We had an amazing turnout despite the foul weather and had an amazing reaction from the audience. There was a great community spirit to the whole day. People were coming up to look at the clothes and ask questions.”

It takes a committee of people to organise an event like this and Sarah wanted to thank them all, with special thanks to Hannah Brown. “We’re planning another show on 13 October – same format but bigger and better,” said Sarah.

Once more, it seems the Market Place is being used for a range of activities that bring in shoppers and browsers, and keep them in the town longer.

“Hitchin has a lot to offer from its fashion retailers,” says Sarah. “This was a great opportunity for us all to show the best we have on offer.”
