Mr Hampson, 72 was invited to the Essex Air Ambulance Air Base and Visitor Centre at Earls Colne to receive his cheque, meet the Air Crew and see the helicopter up close! He joined the Flight for Life Lottery in August 2013 after speaking to one of the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust Canvassers who currently go door to door and to shopping centres to promote the Lottery and gain new members.

Speaking about his win, Rodney said: I signed up to the Flight for Life Lottery because I think the Air Ambulance is a really worthwhile cause. Also, I remember an occasion a few years ago when driving to Harlow along the A10 dual carriageway and there was a helicopter on the north carriageway rescuing someone from a car accident. It really left an impression on me. I have given my daughter Kirstie £1,000 towards her new married life and our two sons Marc and Dominic will get £500 each. The winnings will also pay for the house we are renting in Southwold for Christmas where there will be 12 of us celebrating the festive season. Plus our bathroom is going to get a makeover!”

Rodney swims seven days a week and will be doing a 2K sponsored swim in aid of Herts Air Ambulance. He explains: “Nuffield Health, where I will be doing the swim will issue me with a certificate and I will set up a Just Giving Page so people can sponsor me. Last time I was given a lane to myself and I did it in 90 minutes!”

Janice Flower, Lottery Manager of Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust, said: “We are delighted for Mr Hampson for winning the Superdraw jackpot and thoroughly enjoyed showing him around the Air Base. We wish him every success with his sponsored swim and thank him for his dedication and continued support to the Charity. Playing the Flight for Life Lottery is one of the best ways to support the Charity and keeping the Air Ambulance flying. It is really easy to join and by helping save somebody’s life, you could change your own. On behalf of the Team, I would like to thank all of our current Lottery members for their continued support; we can’t fly without them!”

The Flight for Life lottery has been running since 1998 and is played by many loyal supporters across Essex and Hertfordshire. For £1 every lottery supporter has the chance to win a top prize of £1,000 every week plus 13 further prizes!  The Superdraw Jackpot, available to lottery players for an extra £1 a week, is also drawn weekly and rolls-over until a winner is drawn – once it reaches the maximum of £25,000 a winner is GUARANTEED!

Janice added: “Why spend £2 a week on the National Lottery when you can play the Flight for Life Lottery for just £1 a week and help us to continue saving lives in your county? Go on, give it a whirl!”

The Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust, unlike NHS emergency services, is a Charity which provides a free Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) for critically ill patients. The cost per mission is just over £2,700 and the Charity relies upon the generosity and goodwill of the people and businesses of Essex and Hertfordshire to remain operational and keep saving lives.
