A Hitchin resident will be cycling from Hitchin to Paris this week to raise money for a youth group traveling to Mexico to build houses for families without proper homes. 20 young people and adults from the Urban Saints Hitchin youth group, based at Hitchin Christian Centre (HCC), will be traveling to Tijuana in Mexico during the Easter holidays as part of a group of 140 from all over the UK.

Tom Kember, of Peppermint Road in Hitchin, is one of the leaders traveling with the group and is attempting the sponsored cycle ride to raise his contribution to the cost of the trip and the building materials required to build a basic home in Mexico. The 320- mile journey will take 4 days and Tom will be accompanied by three fellow cyclists plus a support vehicle to carry extra kit and luggage. The party will leave from outside HCC, on Bedford Road, at 7:30am on Thursday 3rd  March, arriving in the centre of Paris on Sunday 6th.

The 20 young people and adults from Urban Saints Hitchin will head out to build a house in 5 days as part of the national ReBuild: Mexico project. The project runs between April 9th and 19th and the Hitchin youth group need a total of £20,000 to cover all the cost involved. Tom’s cycle ride is just one of a number of fundraising initiatives taking place to bring in the money, including quiz nights, meals, cake sales, fun runs, other sponsored events and even a talent show taking place at Hitchin Christian Centre this Friday.
