Carpeting the Cobbles for the Queen

The Queen’s visit to Hitchin was exciting for everyone – especially the team at Charles Wilson Carpets. “We had a call asking us to carpet the cobbles in the Market Square” explains Mark Wilson from the family firm in Hermitage Road. ”We were so proud to help. It was a little nerve racking to fit carpet in front of several thousand people but we got a lovely big cheer as we finished! It was certainly a day to remember.

The unusual request to carpet Hitchin’s Market Square cobbles was for the royal visit on 14th June. 2012 is the 40th birthday of Charles Wilson Carpets as well as the Diamond Jubilee, so the royal request was a special way to mark both special events.

In fact, it was celebrations all around as the winner of the art competition was also announced. “We invited local students to create their ideas of what a room setting would look like in 2052, 40 years from now” said Helen Wilson. “We were so impressed with the hard work and thought that had

been put into the project that we decided to give two prizes.”

The first lucky winner was Kira Hopcroft from Shillington. She wins a £100 photo shoot with Picture This photographers in Hitchin. “We were particularly impressed with the idea of dust eating mice and moving windows” said Adam Wilson who is pictured with Kira.  Toni-Ann Robertson from Nobel School in Stevenage also received a prize. Both winning entries are available to view at
