Celebrate your sport with Nuffield Health

Join Nuffield Health as an Athlete in Residence and gain free membership and support

Sport plays a key role in many people’s lives, helping them to stay fit and healthy, learn new skills and work as part of a team. To support local people to achieve their sporting goals, Nuffield Health launches the first Athlete in Residence, a programme of support to help sports people achieve their goals.

The programme is open to everyone regularly participating in sport to apply, from rising stars to medal winners, aged 16 years and above. It celebrates local sports people and their achievements, while showcasing their passion and sporting ability and how this may have positively improved their health and wellbeing. Each of the 65 Nuffield Health Fitness and Wellbeing Centres in the UK will choose one local sports person to become their Athlete in Residence for the coming year. The selected participants for the programme will benefit from a year’s free membership, personalisation of their sporting kit, sessions with a personal trainer to advise them on strength and conditioning training and regular health MOTs.

Lawrence Okoye, Discus athlete and British 2012 Olympic hopeful, says: “Sport is my passion and I love the satisfaction I get from taking part and succeeding. Having played Rugby for a few years, I took up training full-time for the discus in September 2010. For me the Olympics is a once in a life time opportunity and I’m doing everything I can to get there. I want to show others that making sport a part of your life is not just good for your health and wellbeing, but it’s a chance to work towards achieving your goals. I support the Nuffield Health Athlete in Residence programme and encourage sports people of all ages to enter. The professional support and guidance that you’ll receive will have a positive impact on your performance.”

Entries are now open and people are invited to demonstrate their passion for their sport, and how becoming a member of their local Nuffield Health Fitness and Wellbeing Centre could help them to improve their performance. A series of short questions and an opportunity to describe your sporting interest are included in the entry form www.nuffieldhealth.com/athlete .

Rick Crawford, Fitness and Wellbeing Programme Manager, Nuffield Health, says, “With the Olympics taking place this summer, sport and fitness are top of the cultural agenda in the UK and we want to highlight the vital part this can play in an individual’s overall health and wellbeing.  By being able to offer our sporting people the benefits of regular guidance and a training facility, at our local Nuffield Health Fitness and Wellbeing Centres, we can help them develop and grow in their chosen sport. Whether you play in the local league, represent your local club at local competitions or even travel internationally to compete, we can help you.

“This programme is about supporting people to be the best they can at the sport they love and demonstrate how it helps them to stay healthy. The legacy of the Olympics this summer should inspire ordinary people to keep fit and healthy all year round. You don’t have to be an elite athlete or the greatest player. We’re looking for people who have a real passion and an inspirational story to share.”

The Nuffield Health Athlete in Residence programme is supported by Lucozade Sport and Maxinutrition.

Entries close on Friday, 29 June at 5pm. A panel of health and fitness experts from Nuffield Health will select our Athletes in Residence in July and the successful 65 will be announced at the local Nuffield Health Fitness and Wellbeing Centres during August.
