We have visited Hertford several times, but oddly, this was the first time we went to the castle. We didn't know what we were missing! We strolled around the gardens - immaculate - and marvelled at how well preserved the castle and its outbuildings are. Hertford has a gem here, and it is strange that this is not relegated to being a tourist trap like so many of the castles in England. It's beautiful!

It's nice to come here and walk around and see the history of this place. It is right in the centre of the town but you wouldn't think so when walking around - it's nice and peaceful and you can sit here chilling and reading a book. I like the events they put on in summer too, always lively and well run.

We just did a quick stroll through the gardens as the castle itself is not open to the public. A lot of good photo opportunities on the grounds. If you have some time in Hertford, take a look around.

They should make more of the castle its importance in History , for being used a temporary parliament & being a royal borough.

What a quaint hidden gem of a place in the centre of Hertford. It's a small walk around the lovely grounds and along the banks of the River Lea. Wonderful buildings and historic interests. It's a great and serene place to while away a half or couple of hours. The stillness masks the fact that you are right in the middle of a busy market town. A treasure and a must visit if you have never been.

Attended a weeding at venue. However it is not Castle but a Gatehouse, but functions well for services offered. Good food. Effective staff. Nice park area.

Hertford is a lovely old town. There isn't much to see at the castle but it is right in the centre of town surrounded by beautiful gardens so worth a stroll through on the way to one of the many great old pubs in the area.

Heritage open day gave us a chance to see inside the building. Volunteers very friendly and knowledgeable. Dungeons the best bit. Nice to hear the history and watch a video about the castle.

a day out with the family, its surrounded by gardens and walking areas, a park which is used for events, music, food and film. We visited this area as a day out after lunch with my mother in law, its relaxing and interesting at the same time

This building appears to be unfinished - for several hundred years now - they made a good start but seem to have now given up with the site rather overgrown, there is also a lack of a gift shop and seemingly no dungeon or any form of torture implementation.

I live in Hertford and the castle has lovely peaceful grounds in in the town. It castle grounds are used for local entertainment during the summer . Recently we have had Rock in The Castle with bands and an acoustic stage and a couple of weeks ago in August 2015 we had an open air cinema night for the 30th anniversary of back to the future. One of the entrances to the grounds is next to the Hertford theatre .

This is a fabulous building owned by the council. If they have any tours, it is worth looking at. The grounds are open all the time and are lovely and interesting. The place is steeped in history.

We took a quick trip around the castle today, I have to say it was maintained brilliantly and it was lovely to see it busy. There's lots of benches to take a rest on and lots of history to look at. The castle is very photogenic, with river views and a small play area for children. A lovely hidden gem as such, you can pass it everyday for work and you wouldn't know! Just a shame the castle wasn't open for a quick look around but don't let that put you off. All in all a fab afternoon out.

It's only a short walk around the castle. There are lots of photo opportunities as the river lea runs through the grounds. My young son was delighted that there was a small play area in the grounds of the castle. We would take a picnic next time and sit on the lawns outside the castle.

Hertford Castle is in tact and set in extensive park grounds with the River Lea running through, a lovely place to visit to walk around and enjoy some peace and tranquillity in the heart of the county town of Hertfordshire. The castle is open on certain published days only for tours inside.

I now have attended several functions at the Hertford Castle both for business and pleasure and have been really impressed with the quality of the venue, services provided and overall facilities.
Being a historic castle it is such an impressive venue for your guests and even better, it is so affordable to hire (£60 per hour during the week) which was a total surprise!
