These local history museums are really important to their towns and villages and bring together things that you could not discover easily any other way. Hertford's example is typical and interesting. For instance, in 1942, the people of the area raised £224,578 for a new warship, the HMS Puckeridge. Although the ship was hit by a German U-boat (submarine) the following year, the shield celebrates the connection.
There was a special exhibition on when we went (Song of the Sea) which was fascinating - not least because the whole county is landlocked! The curators are to be commended!
