Volunteering Makes You Happy

It is the start of a new year, so what better way to make a fresh start than volunteering your time and putting your skills to good use? We have roles across West Suffolk and Thetford which are sure to put a smile on your face.

Volunteers can give as much or as little time as they like. There are vacancies across the board, but at the moment we are in great need of van drivers and drivers’ assistants, and retail assistants at all the Hospice shops and the Retail Centre.

However we would also like those with other talents to offer to get in touch. Help is always needed, whether on the Hospice’s inpatient Sylvan Ward, or with creative pursuits, counselling, complementary and beauty therapies, administration, marketing and counselling, to name just a few. If you have skills and time to give, the Hospice will find a role for you.

Also, look out for billboard advertising and poster campaign which is spreading our ‘volunteering makes you happy’ message.

A poll conducted by social networking site i-volunteer.org.uk in August 2010 concluded that 42 per cent of volunteers cite happiness as the main benefit they get from giving up their time.

Second in the poll was the ability of volunteering to keep you connected – with friends, community organisations and society as a whole.

Poll results:

I volunteer because it helps me to be:

  • Happy 42%

  • Connected 38%

  • Sexy 7%

  • Employed 5%

  • Good 5%

  • Health 3%
