A Haverhill teacher and well-known face on the Haverhill stage are playing pivotal roles in a musical in Bury St Edmunds later this month.

Show-stopping numbers, eye-catching costumes and high-energy dancing will take audiences at the Theatre Royal, in Bury St Edmunds, by storm when the Irving Stage Company’s production of Crazy for You opens in a fortnight.

Crazy for You tells the story of Bobby Child, a well-to-do 1930s playboy whose dream in life is to dance. And despite the efforts of his mother and soon-to-be-ex-fiancée, Bobby eventually achieves his dream.

The show is packed with memorable Gershwin tunes, including I Can’t Be Bothered Now, I Got Rhythm, Someone to Watch Over Me, Embraceable You, But Not For Me, Naughty Baby and Nice Work If You Can Get It.

Emily Mizen, 24, of Ashen, near Clare, is playing the role of Polly, in her first production with the Irving Stage Company.

“Crazy for You is such a great show. There are great numbers and the part of Polly is good fun in particular, as there are not many roles that involve acting, singing and dancing. It is really great to find a role that combines all three.

“I am looking forward to getting up on the stage in March. I think the Theatre Royal is beautiful. There are not many theatres with such a great history, so it’s fantastic to be able to work there.”

The former Stoke College and Long Road Sixth Form pupil has been involved with Suffolk Young People’s Theatre, Centre Stage Company, in Haverhill, Outspoken Theatre Company, in Haverhill, and most recently played Louise in Bury St Edmunds Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society’s production of Carousel last year.

The show’s musical director, Mark Jefferson, is head of music at Chalkstone Middle School, in Haverhill, and while many of the cast live in Bury, other cast members hail from Mildenhall, Sudbury, Thetford, Newmarket and Stowmarket.

Director Sian Couture, of Barton Mills, who has directed musicals including Chess, Sweeney Todd and Guys and Dolls for the Bury St Edmunds-based company, said: “It’s a high-energy comedy, which includes mistaken identity, plot twists, fabulous dance numbers and classic Gershwin music.”

Crazy for You is on from Tuesday, March 22 – Saturday, March 26, at 7.30pm, with a matinée at 2.30pm on March 26. For tickets, call the Theatre Royal box office on 01284 769505 or go to www.theatreroyal.org
