5 Simple Steps to Help Achieve Your New Year's Fitness Resolution

One of the most common New Year’s resolutions will be to lose weight, get fit or do something health & fitness related. The majority of the time people will give up on these resolutions without much of an attempt at them; I’ve heard all the excuses for why they failed and none of these should have stopped them. So here are my top 5 tips that will stop you from making the same mistakes and allow you to achieve all your goals! The only regret you will have is that you will wish you had started sooner!

1. Set a Realistic Goal

As well as having a big long term goal, set small short term goals that you can monitor regularly and manage to achieve. For example, if you want to lose 12kg of fat in 6 months, set yourself a goal of training at least 3 times a week for 45 minutes and judge your progress by seeing how differently a set of clothes fit at the end of each week and by taking physical measurements every 6 weeks. SMART goals are key; they should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound.

2. Get Started

Now you’ve set your goal get started and keep a log of what you’re doing and when, that way you know you’re actually doing it rather than just fooling yourself and you can monitor your progress. Remember you don’t have to be great to start but you have to start to be great!

3. Don’t Give Up

A countless number of times I’ve seen people throw in the towel because they either hadn’t seen results or it was simply harder than they expected. If you’re not seeing results or they aren’t coming quickly enough, don’t quit! Either you need to change your regime or you need to be patient. If you have had an unhealthy lifestyle for years you can’t expect to undo all of that damage in a few weeks, give it time. As for quitting because it’s too hard or ‘not for you’, nothing worth doing in life is ever easy. Keep going and I promise you when you achieve your goal you will feel amazing!

4. Get Organised

Organise your diary so you can make time for working out. Set a time where you know you can train so other things can't interfere, and then try stick to this time as much as you can so it becomes a routine. The secret to results is consistency, if you have a well designed workout and a clean diet, all you have to do is work hard, be persistent and you will achieve your goal.

5. Get Help

Now you’re all set just make sure your diet and training programme match your goals. If you need a programme or want to make sure yours is suitable then seek some help, speak to a personal trainer for some advice and the same goes for your diet. If you’re unsure about something or it’s not working for you get some help and change what you’re doing.
