Earlier this year thebestof Guernsey ran a Buy Local Week from 3-9th June to raise awareness of this critical message with islanders. As part of the inititative we also ran a competition for Town shoppers to win prizes from several local businesses.
The top prize of the loan of a Mazda MX-5 with a full tank of petrol for a week was donated by Forest Road Garage and the lucky winner was Stephen Allaway.
Ian Haysom, Sales Manager at Forest Road Garage explains why they chose to offer an experience with this model as the prize;
'The Mazda MX-5 is the world's best-selling two-seater sports car with good reason so, driving one is a great experience for anyone.
It is a multi-award winning car and delivers the true roadster elements - outstanding agility and driving dynamics, optimal power-to-weight ratio and thrilling rear-wheel drive. There is also the added benefit of a soft or hard top roof that takes up no space in the boot; the MX-5 can go from a stunning roadster to a sleek and stylish convertible in seconds.'
In September Stephen organised his special week with the MX-5 so we had a quick chat with him to find out how he got on.
'I was really pleased when I heard that I had won an MX-5 for a week - obviously it's always nice to win something, but this was a particular treat.'
I work for Home James part-time so probably drive about 12-15 different models of car every week; I would honestly say that I'd put the MX-5 at the top of my list for driving experience. It's a very comfortable car, easy to drive and great fun.
Often, I find you can feel slightly vulnerable in sports cars because you are low to the ground but I didn't feel like that in this one at all - even with the roof down I felt very secure in it.
The staff at Forest Road Garage were extremely friendly and helpful - I absolutely couldn't fault them. They handed over the keys and gave me the car with a full tank of petrol.
I would say, if you can afford to treat yourself this is definitely a car to own. It's great for a couple and using around Guernsey, but equally would be an excellent car to take away to the UK or Europe. I loved driving it because it had a great combination of comfort and fun - it felt good.
The only downside to the whole experience was having to give the car back. Next time, I'd really like to win the car forever, not just a week!'
