There are more effective ways for grandparents to get access to their grandchildren than making an application to the court. Figures recently released show that 7 grandparents a day applied to the courts for an order to see their grandchildren in 2014.
At Essex Mediation we believe that grandparents should only resort to an application to the courts when there is no other option available to them. We understand that a divorce or separation can deeply affect grandparents lives by depriving them of the chance to gain access to the grandchildren they love.
Many grandparents who make applications for court orders are completely unaware of any other options they may have. The principal cause of this is because of a lack of information about other methods for settling family disputes.
Family mediation can very often be the best approach for grandparents to restore the contact they desperately seek with their grandchildren. Our qualified and very experienced mediators are available to discuss the most effective ways to encourage family members to join in the mediation process. Our aim is to help negotiate with the family to arrive at a settlement for the future relationship between grandparents and their grandchildren.
It is a fact that grandparents do not have any automatic right to remain a part of their grandchildrens lives. It is also true that since changes to Legal Aid, many grandparents who may in the past have qualified no longer have access to this support, despite the fact that legal aid remains available for mediation.
