With only a year to go until the start of the London Olympics 2012, the excitement is growing in anticipation, especially since it has been announced that the Olympic Torch is to stay the night in Essex.

The Olympic torch will make its way to Hylands Park, where it will stay for its only night in Essex, announced Chelmsford Borough Council last week.

The venue will be hosting the Olympic Torch relay Evening Celebration on Friday 6th July 2012.

On its 70 day journey around the UK, Hylands Park is the only place it will be stopping in Essex which will take place just three weeks before the Opening Ceremony of the Games in Stratford next year.

Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Ray Ride confirmed that around 10 to 15 thousand people will get the opportunity to take part in a day of Olympic celebration. Following an afternoon of community celebration in the beautiful surroundings of Hylands Park, the Olympic Torch Relay convoy will arrive during the early evening.

Ray Ride said: "Chelmsford Borough Council is event managing this day of Olympic celebrations and we are currently preparing plans with event partners including the official Olympic sponsors Coca Cola, Samsung, Lloyds TSB, LOCOG and local partners including Essex County Council.

He added: "I am very proud that Chelmsford has been chosen for this memorable occasion and we are sure that all those who attend will really embrace the spectacular performance we are planning. We are restricted on what we can announce at present, however we will ensure that information is released in timely fashion to enable local people to have the opportunity to be part of this unique occasion."

The spectacular finale of 'Sparks Will Fly', recently selected to be part of the London 2012 Festival, will conclude a truly memorable day of Olympic celebrations.

Councillor Ride finished by saying: "This will be a ticketed event to ensure the safety and security of all those who attend. We are still a year away from the event and details about tickets and how to get them will be released nearer the event."
