What is Chlamydia? Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacteria. Chlamydia can affect both men and women. 25% of women and 50% of men develop symptoms.

1 in 10 people under 25 who have been tested are infected with chlamydia, but many won't have any obvious signs or symptoms or only get mild symptoms, which they won't notice; so most people won't know they have the infection.

If there are symptoms, they usually show up 1-3 weeks after coming into contact with Chlamydia. If left untreated, in some people chlamydia can cause longer term health problems including infertility and pain, especially in the lower abdomen.

Women and men under 25, who have been sexually active and currently show no signs or symptom can get screening for free.

Where can I get a test from? In Mid-Essex help is available from the ruClear? Mid Essex Chlamydia Screening Office.
