ARTICLE FROM BBC NEWS OXFORD:

Residents of Abingdon in Oxfordshire will be able to learn about the history of the town's abbey when a new heritage trail is opened on Saturday.

The trail is part of the The Lost Abbey Project which was funded by a £49,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Mary Lambe of the Friends of Abbey Gardens said it was an "exciting new informative trail on the medieval history of Abingdon".

It will officially open at 11:00 BST at the Gateway next to the Guildhall.

There are a number of public information boards along the new route which link the town's main medieval abbey sites.

The opening is part of Abingdon's Heritage Open Weekend and volunteers will be taking visitors on guided walks.

In 2012 the project organisers are releasing a booklet on the history of the Abbey which will contain a series of reconstructions of the Abbey church as it may have looked at stages through its 500 year life.

There will also be an education pack to encourage schools to visit the site.
