ABINGDON’S Guildhall could be transformed into a profitable community venue with a cinema in a million pound revamp.

Abingdon Town Council was handed the Grade II-listed building with £1.2m for improvements after a deal with Vale of White Horse District Council in April.

The district council was losing £100,000 a year running the civic hall and the town council said it was in a better position to manage it.

The new owner has now asked consultancy firm Mayfield Arts to investigate the commercial viability of running a cinema in the Abbey Hall as well as live entertainment, weddings, conferences and exhibitions.
