Here are a few tips on growing your own fruit and veg from Giovanni of Giovanni's Italian Restaurant, Warwick.

Whether you have an allotment or are looking to grow organically in your back garden hopefully these pearls of wisdom from Giovanni will help.  Giovanni has been growing his own veg for years and not has two allotments!

The fresh vegetables are used in his restaurant and get a great reaction. This is why Giovanni has remained dedicated to growing his own produce, and keeping it all organic.  He regularly grows onions, artichokes, potatoes, lettuce, beans, marrow, courgette, Italian beans, pumpkin, leak, spinach, cherry tomatoes, sweetcorn and herbs such as parsley, basil, sage, fennil, rosemary.

Giovanni advises to never use any chemicals or artificial fertilisers.  This way you will ensure everything is totally organic and you will notice the difference when you eat it. Remove weeds manually. Its the hard way but the only way to do it naturally!

Start planting in February & expect to start picking from April right through to October.

Giovanni recommends treating the soil with manure to enrich the soil.  You should only do this every 4 years though otherwise the soil will get too rich. You can get this from local farmers and they should be able to deliver it too!
