Electrical accidents happen more often than you think.

Every year in the UK about 70 people die and 1.2 million are injured in electrical accidents at home.

Almost a third of electrical accidents happen as a result of people using faulty household appliances or cutting through electric cables when they are doing DIY or gardening.

The good news is that many injuries and deaths could be avoided by having RCD protection – whether by using a plug-in adaptor or better still, getting it installed in your sockets or consumer unit, (fusebox).

What is an RCD ?

It is a residual current device or safety tripping device which switches off the electricity in a fraction of a second if you get an electric shock. It provides much better protection than just having ordinary fuses or circuit breakers.

Having a modern consumer unit fitted with RCDs gives you the best protection,as they usually cover all of your wiring, sockets and appliances in your home. From everyday electrical appliances to power tools, your whole family will be much safer using electricity.

If you are unsure whether your consumer unit already has built-in RCD protection, look for the ‘T’ test button and label stating ‘test quarterly’.If you see them,it’s likely you are already RCD protected.

Like a smoke detector,an RCD installed in your home could one day save your life.
