Are your children in danger when using the Internet? Here is a chance for parents to learn how to keep them safe.

Modern technology today moves at such a pace that it is very difficult to know how to keep up.  As an adult one can always step back and feel that one does not need to always be on the cuting edge of things.  However, with children it is very different and peer pressure to keep up with the latest trends can be huge.  Parents have to be fully aware of what their children can be exposed to.

It is believed by police schools officers that children are so easily risking harm and distress by not realising the potential danger of posting explicit images of themselves and not understanding how these images are permenently online world-wide to be seen by anyone.

Even more worryingly, some charities are oncerned that children have come to accept "sexting" as a normal part of growing up and will certainly not discuss this with their parents.

Sutton Local Safeguarding Children Board together with the Metropolitan Police and and Sutton council have initiated the first Community Safety Presentation to help parents understand what the dangers are and how they can protect their children

Two hour long sessions have been arranged at the Sutton Life Centre on Tuesday 20th October and there will be two guest speakers both of whom are specialists in the field of child protection.

  • Joanna Sharpen is from AVA (Against Violence and Abuse) where she is the Children and Young People's Project Co-ordinator.
  • Det.Con. Karen France is from the Met.Police's Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command.  she is the special point of contact for Sutton borough in matters of child sexual exploitation.
Following the talks there will be an opportunity for parents to talk to Sutton's polce officers and the council's e-safety officer to raise any issues or ask questions.

Places are still available for both presentations.
