World Heart Day started in 1999 and is held on the last Sunday of September every year.

Organised by The World Heart Foundation World Heart Day raises awareness of cardiovascular diseases and ways to reduce their risk. It is an International campaign.

This is the perfect day to quit smoking, get exercising and start eating healthy – all in the name of keeping your heart in good working order, and improving the health and well being of people the world over.

World Heart Day spreads the news that if the main risk factors are controlled at least 80 percent of premature deaths from heart disease and strokes could be avoided.

Risk factors that may lead to heart disease and stroke include:

  • Raised blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels.
  • Smoking.
  • Inadequate intake of fruit and vegetables.
  • Obesity.

Just by taking a brisk 10 minute walk a day, 3 times a day 5 days a week will help to maintain a healthy heart.

Also dont forget Englands  "Stoptober Campaign" now in its 4th year encourages smokers to stop smoking for 28 days from 1st October.
