We stopped for a bite to eat to try a new place and we were pleasantly surprised. Room full of character, very tasty dishes. You won't be disappointed.

Ate here last year and had to come back for more. Not disappointed. Beautiful freshly cooked food and lovely wine. Staff v friendly and attentive. Great ambience in an eclectic setting. Eaten here twice this week and not disappointed either time. Would recommend the Camembert starter and also the scotch eggs- yummy. Main courses- we've had the lamb, chicken, Mexican seafood tacos and the classic fish & chips. All delicious. If we lived here we would be here all the time. May have to move!!!

We found this place by accident and I am so glad we did. Beautifully decorated and with a nice cosy feel, you felt like you were in someone's dinning room. We eat here twice, the food was really good and the Sunday lunch was excellent, especially the rhubarb crumble. Well worth a visit but book in advance as it gets very busy.

Lovely atmosphere, great tasting local produce on offer, cracking Sunday lunch and a chocolate fondant & ginger ice cream to die for!
Having tried & failed several times to eat in this lovely restaurant due to its popularity (always a good sign) we persevered, and I'm pleased to say that my husband and i have now eaten here several times in the last few weeks!
Great place and can't wait for our next visit.

Food and wine were excellent. Relaxed atmosphere. Service was great - I hate having a new best friend in restaurants but the service here was really good, friendly, polite and helpful without being OTT.

We were a party of four and enjoyed three great courses, which included starters, entrees and desert. All of the dishes were very good and we enjoyed speaking with the manager. It was a very nice experience. Be sure and try the smoked Mackerel rarebit starter it was delicious.

Stayed for weekend with friends and ate here on the Friday night. Food excellent with good service. We were a table of 8 and "Mine Host" Gareth and his team looked after us well.
Rooms are well appointed albeit mine smaller (but cheaper) than colleague's - the double bed has to be against one wall. No problem as travelling solo. Wet room with good shower.
Steep stairs to get to rooms so care needed after a good night out!
Breakfast great.
Will visit again.

as we were there in Shrewsbury only for the weekend and not having knowledge of this place we did not book and unfortunately we could not be accommodated. we had entered the restaurant to enquire if they had a table and whilst we could not taste the food we took away some smells that were delightful and for free.
we will be more careful if we ever go to Shrewsbury again even if we have to book a month before.
C'est la vie

Amazing food. Very friendly staff. Decorated beautifully. Will definitely eat here again. We even made friends with another couple of diners who we ended up staying in there for more drinks with. Excellant!!!!

This restaurant is beautifully furnished and very welcoming. My partner had a ginger beer and I had a blueberry cordial, both of which were garnished with fresh mint and lime. We both had Welsh rarebit with pickled pear and walnuts. It's was beautiful, my only gripe would be the toasted bread was so hard I was scared I may chip a tooth. We shared some chips and the portion was very small, so I recommend a portion each. It is one of the most beautiful looking rooms I have eaten in. We will return and try something else off the lovely menu

First visit to the Golden Cross, having been tempted by the reviews and the menu. It is a distinctive restaurant, something to appreciate when so many places are part of a large group and whilst are often good, there is a sense of corporate sameness about them.
The dining room is cosy enough, though perhaps a bit cool on one of the few damp, windy evenings of the summer so far. The welcome was pleasant, though we weren't told what the soup of the day was or of another change to the menu. A crab and prawn salad was what it was, and good at that. A bit wacky sounding was a tempura avocado dish served with a fiery salsa - I haven't eaten much Mexican food, but this was really delicious.A lemon sole was served on the bone, but it would have been much better if the fins had been removed prior to cooking. A little more of the butter it had been cooked in would have been an improvement, but these are small details - served with jersey potatoes and vibrantly green spinach it was delicious.
The chicken in the chicken on rosti dish was full of flavour, though the rosti was rendered un-crisp by being served underneath the chicken and a ratatouille. Why make towers out of everything?A lavender brulee was a delight and a Welsh rarebit sweet with candied walnuts was generous in quantity and adventurous in execution.
It is a restaurant to tempt you back - have a peek at the menu from time to time to see what new ideas they come up with.

We have enjoyed the food, atmosphere, company and music many times. As a couple or with friends The Golden Cross is a wonderful experience. Theresa and Gareth make the difference, wonderful hosts serving good food. Our favourite for an amazing Sunday Lunch, delicious beef cooked to perfection.
We always have our Christmas Staff Party at The Golden Cross and are never disappointed.

I have eaten at the Golden Cross several times over the last few years, this has been as a couple and in larger groups, every time has been a marvelous experience for all concerned.
This time I reserved a table for 3 people (myself and 2 friends, who both live in other midland towns). This booking was for 1300 hours on Saturday 15th July.Throughout the meal the service was friendly and efficient without being over familiar or overbearing.
The food selected by all 3 of us, was of a very high standard and enjoyed greatly by everyone (I can recommend the Sirloin Steak).I would always be happy to eat at this wonderfully quirky little Restaurant.

I don't want to say what I feel incase word gets round and we are unable to book again because it's so busy but......this is the most fabulous quirky perfect place to stay and to eat . If you appreciate brilliant food and a very warm accommodating welcome this is the place. The rooms and the restaurant are gorgeous with brilliant attention to detail...the Welsh lamb with dauphnoise potatoes was divine ...hubby had the fresh homemade steak burger with bacon and cheese and it was cooked to perfection ....the breakfast the next day was also gorgeous fresh and beautifully cooked.
We cannot praise this lovely place enough. Cannot wait to return soon.Thank you Gareth and Theresa x

A previous reviewer put their finger on it. Eating here is so relaxed it's like being at home but with better food!!! The fish taco was really nice with just enough heat, the lemon sole perfect and the lamb as good as my wife has ever eaten. Add excellent wines and a shared cheeseboard and it was a fabulous evening.
We are in the time when any decent restaurant opens multiple branches then sells out to a souless owner. The Golden Cross is how restaurants should be... small, personable with great food, wine and service. We should protect and support this dying breed and give it with our custom. Well done Theresa. We will come again.

The atmosphere & décor are incomparable. This is higher priced food than standard pub grub, but the service & surroundings are well worth it. Our female server was very accommodating, friendly, & chatty.

We booked for a Tuesday night and it was quite full. The ambience is lcosy and relaxed. Service from the lady and young waiter was prompt & efficient but not intrusive. We ordered the bread, balsamic & olives to share to start. My partner had fillet of lamb which he sis was very good, and I had Mexican cod & king prawn taco. My meal was amazing, the fish was perfectly cooked and the plate was filled with complimenting flavours. Special mention for the salsa, which had a fab kick of heat and flavour!
We finished our meal with the chocolate mousse and ginger ice cream and lavender crime brûlée, both beautifully prepared. The attention to detail in every aspect of this restaurant is impressive. An excellent night out, thank you very much - we will hopefully visit again soon.

I visited the Golden Cross with my husband for a relaxing meal on a beautiful Friday evening. The restaurant feels like you are having dinner in a friend or family members dining room as it is small and intimate, and they are very welcoming there. The menu is not huge, but is more then adequate with something for everyone. We ordered a bottle of wine and we both chose the sirloin steak. The steaks were perfectly cooked as requested medium and came with twice cooked chips, roasted vine tomatoes and a green salad. It was delicious and didn't last long. When our plates were collected we were asked if everything had been ok with our meal. My husband did point out that it was lovely but it was missing mushrooms as he likes these with his steak normally. The waiter said that if we had asked he was sure that they would have been more then happy to provide these. We said we would remember that for next time. We then had a look at the dessert menu. We normally don't eat dessert, but the choices were so good that we both went for the baked dark chocolate mousse with ginger ice cream, although I requested mine with vanilla instead of the ginger ice cream and they were more then happy to oblige me with this request. All in all we had a lovely meal. As others have said they are not huge portions, but they are more then sufficient for us, as we don't like to be over full and feel uncomfortable after a meal. We would definitely recommend a visit to The Golden Cross and will be visiting ourselves again in the future.

We chose the Golden Cross as a halfway meeting point between us and our friends who were visiting Wales.
The restaurant was fantastically decorated in a quirky but very welcoming style, top marks! The staff were very friendly indeed and the food was mostly excellent, although the stir fry was a little bland, hence 4 stars.
The wine and drinks were very good too. We'd definitely visit again!

We had dinner in the private function room in May, which was the perfect setting for a family party with 9 adults and 6 children. I am so glad we had chosen this venue for a special occasion. The room itself is charming, elegant, and full of character with ancient beams and a slanting floor. It provided a relaxed and intimate atmosphere, like in someones drawing room, just what we needed. Food was excellent, my lamb was cooked to perfection. We had ordered starters and mains in advance from across the menu and were looked after very well, without service being too intrusive or absent for too long. Just perfect. The children could opt for single or double portions from the children's menu and there were plenty vegetarian or gluten free options. Everyone was very happy and we have fond memories of that night!

We returned to the Golden Cross for a 'Big Birthday Party' inviting all our best friends. It was a wonderful evening Theresa, Gareth and their colleagues made it very special indeed. The food was excellent The whole atmosphere could not be better! The dining area looked absolutely amazing. We also stayed overnight in the King size Room, which was quirky and very tasteful. The breakfast the following morning was wonderful. All our friends agree. Thank you Theresa and Gareth and all the staff - great place. We shall be back It is special not like anything else in Shrewsbury.

We were fortunate enough to pop back here for Sunday lunch after a wedding in Chester. We had popped in on the Saturday and loved it so decided to book. Very friendly and accommodating. The decor is lovely, very eclectic and quirky but also very tastefully done. The food was out of this world delicious and we were gutted we couldn't stay for pudding as our car parking was going to run out. We would definitely return and highly recommend a visit.
